Do your windows need to be replaced? You can feel overwhelmed by the variety of options accessible. We’ll go over some of the most crucial things to think about in this article. It all boils down to finding the best option for you in terms of location, energy efficiency, noise level, and climate. To begin, we’ll look at the differences between double pane and triple pane impact windows.

Energy Efficiency

Windows are responsible for 25 percent to 30 percent of heat gain and loss in household heating and cooling energy use, according to Energy.gov. It’s critical to choose a window that’s compatible with your environment and energy efficiency goals. The first step in lowering your energy bill is to replace your windows.

For instance, in summertime, the two windows capacity to reduce heat isn’t significantly different. With that being said, why would a three-pane window be preferable?

Tiny tin metals and silver oxides made up of low emissivity (Low-E) give the window a mirror look. Low emissivity is applied to only one side of a single sheet of glass. As a result, the triple pane does not have a higher benefit in blocking heat than the double pane.

Efficiency Ratings

The ratings on the window label measures the amount of heat transmitted through the glass into your home. The solar heat gain coefficient (SGHC) and other ratings is located on the window label. The lower the number, the better the low E is at reducing the quantity of radiation or heat entering your home. The SGHC rating is nearly identical for double and triple pane impact windows.

Winter time is a different ballgame and you will get more efficiency with a triple pane. The technology underlying these impact windows combines argon gas and Low-E glass with triple glazing, resulting in a significant difference in glass performance. A triple pane glass window is best for thermal comfort. In the winter, triple pane glass will have a modest benefit since it contains two air spaces instead of one. This offers a stronger barrier to reducing cold elements.

Soundproofing

STC (sound transmission class) measures sound in terms of reduction. The greater the STC, the less noise. Here are some references for comparison.

  • STC changes are hardly audible  +/- 3
  • Audible STC changes are +/- 5
  • STC changes of +/- 10 are twice as loud

In Window Terms:

  • Triple Pane STC =  29
  • Double Pane STC = 31
  • Standard Window STC = 25

If you live on a busy street, near an airport or train station, a triple pane window may be the best option for reducing noise. Granted, a new window will not just improve your home’s insulation. Thus, It will make it more peaceful and quiet. If you live close to your neighbors, you may want to keep your noise inside. The additional pane of glass provides more privacy.

Storm Protection

Hurricane season in South Florida is something for which your home must be prepared. Abnormally high tides, wind speed, and rainfall inches are all things to consider, especially during a storm. Hurricane sustained winds reach up to 157 mph or greater. Any object picked up that strikes your home, will break down windows or doors.

Moreover, impact windows will help you stay protected against severe winds and flying items. Broken glass remains intact and gust of wind wont enter the home. This will protect against the roof blowing off or a collapsed structure.

Security

Double and triple pane Impact windows protect us from the elements outside our home, and both choices will provide more protection than single pane windows. Triple panes will be more difficult to shatter if a burglary occurs. Both windows will give additional security and make it more difficult for any forced entries.

Installation

Finally, regardless of whether the Impact windows are double or triple pane, professional installation is probably one of the most crucial aspects to consider while replacing them. You want to be certain that there are no leaks and that everything is 100% airtight. Ensure that your window supplier is licensed and insured, and can provide warranties to ensure their work, products, and services are of high quality.
