Do you live in one of the most impacted places in Florida by hurricanes? If you live in any part of Florida you know that hurricane season is always a threat every year. They travel in packs and can cause death, destruction, and massive amounts of damage. Hurricanes are huge storms with strong winds that blow over the ocean for days before ever making landfall. Hurricanes can cause billions of dollars of damage each year, which is why companies like LockTight Impact Windows and Doors are selling products to keep homes and businesses safe during these storms.

Since Hurricane Andrew ravaged Florida in 1992, the state has been on a constant lookout for ways to protect itself from future storms. In fact, since 1992, there have been 19 hurricanes that have landed over the Florida coast—that’s an average of one every two years. These storms hit all parts of Florida but some areas get more than others. The following list contains the top 6 most impacted places in Florida by hurricanes.

 Southeast Florida

Southeast Florida includes areas like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. This area is the most impacted part of Florida during hurricane season, getting hit on average once a year. In 2004, Hurricanes Francis and Jeanne both hit Southeast Florida with major damage and destruction.

Other places in the state follow closely behind Southeast Florida in terms of hurricanes making landfall. However, these coast tends to get hit the most frequent when it comes to these natural disasters.

Key West And The Florida Keys

The South Florida Keys are another extremely vulnerable spot when it comes to hurricanes and storm surges. These islands stretch into the ocean and a low-lying which causes extensive damage and flooding when these storms hit.

Hurricane Irma was an intense category 4 hurricane that hit Key West in 2017, destroying homes and businesses across the area. When it comes to planning for a future in the state of Florida, making plans to protect your home from hurricanes is essential.

Southwest Florida

Southwest Florida includes areas like Naples and Fort Meyers. This region is very attractive for tourists and residents alike because of the beautiful beaches. This coast is often spared from many large storms that hit the east coast, however, Southwest Florida is not always so lucky.

Hurricane Irma tore through Florida with record-setting winds and storm surges which caused massive flooding and damage throughout the area. Irma caused more than $64 billion dollars in damage and was names the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in history.

West Florida

West Florida includes the Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota, and Clearwater area of the state. Although this part of Florida has been spared from any major hurricanes they do experience tropical storms year-round. One of the worst hurricanes to tear through West Florida was the 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane. This storm reached Category 4 with over 140mph winds and an estimated storm surge of 11.

Hurricane Irma hit Tampa Bay at a Category 1 storm when once forecasted as a Category 5. Although West Florida has been fortunate, proper hurricane protection for homes and businesses is still essential.

Central Florida

Central Florida includes the Orlando, Daytona, and Jacksonville areas. This part of the state is hit by hurricane season as well as tropical storms yearly as well. In 2004 Hurricane Frances made landfall in Central Florida resulting in over $2 billion dollars in damage. Lucky for Central Florida, when hurricanes make landfall they weaken to a lower category storm before hitting this region.

However, in 2017 the infamous Hurricane Irma impacted this area with winds over 100mph and a storm surge that destroyed homes and businesses across the region. So, even though this is the center of the state they still experience hurricanes that cause so much devastation to residents

The Florida Panhandle

The Florida Panhandle includes areas like Pensacola, Panama City, and Tallahassee. This area is affected by severe storms about every couple of years.  In 1995, Hurricane Opal made landfall in the Florida panhandle with winds of over 150mph and left the state with over $4.7 billion dollars in damage.

However, the most devastating the Panhandle has ever experienced was in 2018 by Hurricane Michael. Hurricane Michael made landfall as a Category 5, making it the strongest storm in US history since Hurricane Andrew.
